Learn More about Boca do Inferno

Boca do Inferno is a chasm located on the seaside cliffs near the Portuguese city of Cascais, in the Lisbon district. Cascais is a fisherman's town that is worth a visit with its beautiful beaches and pleasant hiking trails.

Boca do Inferno is an extremely eroded rock formation located 1.2 miles (2 km) north of Cascais. The area is very popular among Portuguese fishermen, who face danger by climbing steep cliffs. The seawater has access to the deep bottom of the chasm and strongly hits its rocky walls, making it a popular tourist attraction.

Boca do Inferno is about a 20-minute walk from the city center. It's a pleasant walk if you follow the coastal road past the Palace of the Condes de Castro Guimarães Museum, the Farol Hotel, and the Grande Real Villa Italia Hotel.

This "Hell Mouth" has amazed and terrified its visitors since ancient times. The ocean, by its violent comings and goings, has hollowed out the rock, forming an arch or rather a stone jaw in which a hellish soup is boiling. Striking, even if the spectators are sometimes a little too numerous at the edge. You can constantly hear the waves crashing against the rocks, a noise that, according to legend, is actually the roar of the devil, hence its name.

On the side of red cliffs discover the magnificent ocean and some sailboats passing off, you will be astonished by this geological formation and the power of the waves hitting its rocks, a ballad which is worth the eye in a place where nature is dominant. Take a chance to immortalize this wonder of nature, and why not enjoy the sunset reflected in the caves and in the water.
